1 Unity & Visual Studio

Download the Unity "Personal" Free edition. https://store.unity.com/ Follow the onscreen instructions or ask a parent to help you install. The screenshot below was taken Nov 2017. The site may or maynot have updated the page. Don;t be concerned if the page does not look exactly the same.

Unity is the main game programming tool we will use to make our games. Unity is a game engine. It simplifies game making by providing an interface to do various things that every video game needs over and over again built in. For the parts of our video game that aren't built in, we will have Visual Studio and the programming language C#.NET

2 MagicaVoxel

Download MagicaVoxel. http://ephtracy.github.io/ Follow the onscreen instructions or ask a parent to help you install.

MagicaVoxel is an easy 3D modeling tool. You make 3D models by putting colored blocks together, called voxels. The models won't be as fancy as a high-end 3D graphics modeling program like Blender, Maya or 3D Studio Max. The high-end modeling programs can take months to learn to use fluently. In the game camp we are going to concentrate more on the game programming therefore MagicaVoxel is a perfect free tool for us.

3 Mixamo

Signup for Mixamo. https://www.mixamo.com/ Follow the onscreen instructions. You need an email to signup for Mixamo. Ask a parent for help.

Mixamo has dozens of stock animations we can apply to a 3D model. We make a model of a character in MagicaVoxel. Then use Mixamo online to give the model different movement animations (ie: walk, run, jump, attack, fall, sit, climb, etc.)

4 Freesound.org

Signup for Freesound.org. https://freesound.org Follow the onscreen instructions. You need an email to signup. Ask a parent for help.

Freesound has thousands of free sounds and music loops we can use in our games.

5 Free Fonts

Get free fonts from here. https://www.1001freefonts.com Browse thru the thousands of fonts. Find ones right for your game. Download to your assets folder.

6 Audacity

Sound editor and recorder http://www.audacityteam.org/download/ For when you need to get a sound 'just right' for your game. Or if you want to record your own sounds.

Audacity is luckily still free. They accept donations though for their great product.

7 DrawIsland.com

Make transparent sprites (images) for your 2d games. FREE with an online application that you don't have to install. Free online image editor https://drawisland.com/ This is a free alternative to photoshop which can do transparency and other basic necessary sprite editing features for 2D game art. You don't need to run an install (or even signup) to use it. It's free, simple and effective.

8SketchBook

Make transparent sprites (images) for your 2d games. This is a desktop application that Autodesk has just made FREE! Download AutoDesk Sketchbook https://www.sketchbook.com/thankyou Sketchbook is a desktop application that you can use to make your 2D drawings for Unity games. This application does transparency, layers, works with computer drawing pen pressure sensitivity.
